Family Advent – Day 14

Today’s Reading: Psalm 72:8–11; Matthew 2:1–12; Revelation 7:9–10

Before reading, pray together and ask the Holy Spirit to help your family see Jesus as the righteous King who deserves our worship.

Today’s Big Truth:

Jesus is the righteous King who deserves honor from every nation.

Psalm 72 paints a picture of a perfect King—one who rules with justice, righteousness, and compassion. It says:

“All kings will bow before Him,

and all nations will serve Him.”

 — Psalm 72:11 (NLT)

This psalm was originally prayed over Israel’s kings, like Solomon. But no earthly king ever lived up to this description. No human ruler has ever had a kingdom that reached “from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth” (v.8).

This psalm was pointing forward to Someone far greater—

a King whose reign would stretch across nations, cultures, and generations.

Pointing to Jesus: Kings from Far Away Come to Worship

Hundreds of years after the psalm was written, wise men from distant lands followed a star to find a newborn King. These were not Israelites. They were foreigners—exactly the kind of distant kings Psalm 72 describes.

When they finally reached Jesus:

“They bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

 — Matthew 2:11 (NLT)

Their worship fulfilled the picture in Psalm 72—nations bringing gifts to honor God’s chosen King.

Pointing to Jesus: A King Worshiped by Every Nation

But the vision doesn’t stop with the wise men. The Bible shows us an even greater scene still to come.

In Revelation, John sees people from all over the world gathered before Jesus:

“After this, I saw a vast crowd from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. And they were shouting with a great roar, ‘Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!’”

 — Revelation 7:9–10 (NLT)

This is the final and fullest fulfillment of Psalm 72—

every nation honoring Jesus, the righteous King who brings justice, peace, and hope.

This teaches us something beautiful:

  • Jesus is the promised King David longed for.
  • People from all over the world are invited to worship Him.
  • We can offer our lives as gifts to our King.

Truth for Today

  • Jesus is the righteous King who deserves our worship.
  • His kingdom will one day include people from every nation.
  • We honor Him when we give Him our hearts, our obedience, and our gifts.
